2009 Educate! Summer Internship

The Educate! internship provides an opportunity for motivated individuals to work closely with Educate! students and partners in Uganda. With the guidance of our country directors, interns take an active role in the implementation and development of Educate!’s programs. The internship is a chance for cross-cultural exchange between Educate!’s volunteers and its mentors, students, and supporters in Uganda. Past interns made valuable contributions to the organization, and Educate! will be excited to welcome its next group of interns in Uganda this summer.

The Intern Experience

Educate! interns will be given tasks that are key to the programs’ operation and development. Their responsibilities will vary over the course of the internship, so interns must be flexible in receiving assignments. Intern tasks and activities may include:

  • Identifying new partner schools. Visiting schools and speaking with administrators, teachers and students to determine if they would be receptive to Educate!’s programs.
  • Evaluating last year’s mentor recruitment process.
  • Recruiting new mentors. This includes advertising, reading applications, and interviewing.
  • Advertising and recruiting teachers and students for a certificate course in the Educate! curriculum. Organizing the course and training teachers.
  • Attending meetings of the socially responsible leadership course at partner schools. Participating in activities with the students.
  • Working on projects with the social entrepreneurship clubs.
  • Evaluating the programs, including the work of the mentors, experience of the students, participation of the school communities, etc.
  • Fundraising. Writing grant proposals and networking.
  • Spending time with the Educate! students and mentors.
  • Experiencing life in Uganda!

Intern Testimonials

“Unforgettable” is the best way to describe my experience interning with Educate! this summer. Whether it was presenting Educate!’s new leadership programs to partner schools around Kampala; spending time in Kyangwali refugee camp with some of the original Educate! students; or navigating the public transportation system of Kampala, each day in Uganda held a new and exciting adventure. I am inspired by all of the incredible work of Educate!’s volunteers and its dedicated students and partners. I am confident that Educate! is a few steps closer to achieving its vision of sustainable development through education in socially responsible leadership in Uganda.

— Helaina Stein, 2008 Intern

Interning with Educate! has literally been the best experience of my life. As an intern, I was constantly challenged and given tasks that were crucial to the organization’s growth. I was encouraged to throw myself into new situations and take on significant responsibilities; I never felt like I was sitting on the sidelines. The people I’ve met through my work with the organization – the other interns and volunteers, sponsored students, and administrators and teachers at partner schools – are truly incredible and have greatly impacted the way I view the world. I am constantly in awe of the amazing work of the organization and its partners in Uganda, and I will always value the chance I was given to take part in Educate!’s development.

— Stacey Frumm, 2007 and 2008 Intern
