Creating Their Own Opportunities
Educate! youth start and run real businesses, building the most essential skills for greater economic opportunity.
Before graduating from secondary, youth show improvements in key areas:
95% income increase
Young women earn 244% more
50% increase in employment
Girls increase by 113%
44% increase in business ownership
Young women increase by 91%
In 2016, Educate! partnered with BRAC to assess the Educate! Experience’s impact at scale through a quasi-experimental evaluation. This evaluation found that just before graduating from secondary school, youth who participated in Educate! performed greater than non-participants in the comparison group in all three of Educate!’s core economic outcomes: income, employment, and business ownership.

Why target youth income & employment?
Meet Sarah
Youth like Sarah have been able to continue their education thanks to the small businesses they have created. Sarah’s enterprises have not only given her greater independence, but also create ripple effects in her community as she pays her sibling’s school fees, employs a family member, and now serves as a youth Mentor to help coach other young men and women.
Sarah’s increased agency means she can dream bigger as she plans for her future.
In the longer term, she hopes to put herself through university and someday own an orphanage: “I’ve seen how hard it is for children to survive when their parents cannot support [them]… I can teach them skills so that one day they are in the position to start up something of their own, without other people, just like I have.”
