Position Overview

We are on the lookout for 120 passionate and driven individuals to join our pool of Enumerators for a paid data collection assignment in Tanzania!

If selected, you'll receive in-depth training and, based on your performance, will be assigned to exciting fieldwork opportunities at schools and training sites.

We’re seeking individuals with a proven eye for detail and experience in administering quantitative and/or qualitative surveys using mobile-based tools like SurveyCTO, ODK or Kobo Toolbox. Your role? Collect vital data from business studies teachers and students to help shape a better education system.

What You’ll Do 🌟

The enumerators will support school-based quantitative and/or qualitative data collection in selected schools within the assigned districts. Data will be collected from Students, Business Studies Teachers, and Academic Masters. The students’ questionnaires will be administered using paper-based tools and later entered into SurveyCTO at a central data entry location, while data from Business Studies teachers and Academic Masters will be collected directly using SurveyCTO. Enumerators will be assigned to quantitative or qualitative data collection depending on the needs of the study.

Key duties and responsibilities will include:

  1. Participate in all training sessions, practical exercises, and tool piloting activities to understand the study objectives, data collection tools, consent procedures, safeguarding requirements, and fieldwork protocols.

  2. Work with supervisors and school authorities to plan and conduct data collection activities in selected schools while minimizing disruption to normal school routines.

  3. Identify and engage selected students, Business Studies teachers, Academic Masters, and other respondents according to the approved sampling criteria and field instructions.

  4. Obtain informed consent from adult respondents and follow approved consent and assent procedures when engaging students.

  5. Maintain privacy, confidentiality, neutrality, professionalism, and respect throughout the data collection process.

  6. Administer paper-based questionnaires to selected students and ensure that responses are complete, clear, and accurately recorded.

  7. Conduct direct electronic data collection with Business Studies teachers and Academic Masters using SurveyCTO or any other approved mobile data collection platform.

  8. Conduct or support qualitative interviews, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions using approved guides and appropriate probing techniques, where assigned.

  9. Support centralized data entry of completed student paper-based questionnaires into SurveyCTO, ensuring that entries accurately match the original forms.

  10. Verify entered student data against the original paper questionnaires to minimize errors and ensure completeness, consistency, and accuracy.

  11. Review completed questionnaires, digital submissions, notes, and recordings daily to ensure data quality before submission.

  12. Take clear notes during qualitative interviews or discussions and ensure recordings, where applicable, are properly labeled, stored, and submitted according to the study protocol.

  13. Upload or submit completed digital forms, entered data, paper questionnaires, field notes, recordings, and daily progress updates within agreed timelines.

  14. Report refusals, incomplete interviews, safeguarding concerns, technical problems, data quality issues, or other field challenges to supervisors promptly.

  15. Participate in daily briefings and debriefings, share field experiences, and provide feedback to improve tools, procedures, and overall data quality.

  16. Safeguard all study materials and equipment, including paper questionnaires, consent forms, tablets, phones, audio recorders, notebooks, and any other materials provided for the assignment.

  17. Demonstrate punctuality, integrity, teamwork, flexibility, and confidentiality throughout the assignment.

  18. Perform any other related duties assigned by the supervisor to support the successful completion of the fieldwork.

Who You Are 🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️

  • You're not just looking for a job — you’re looking to make a difference. You’re curious, detail-oriented, and passionate about gathering insights that fuel meaningful change. Here's what we’re looking for in our ideal candidate:

  • Hold a Diploma or Degree in Social Sciences, Economics, Statistics, Business Studies, Education, or a related field. Candidates without these academic qualifications may be considered if they have at least 2 years of proven data collection experience.

  • Have at least 1 year of hands-on experience in data collection, including in-person surveys, phone surveys, key informant interviews, and/or focus group discussions.

  • Have experience in quantitative and/or qualitative data collection. Experience in both methods will be an added advantage.

  • Be available for in-person training and fieldwork during the scheduled data collection period and willing to visit selected schools for in-person baseline surveys.

  • Be comfortable collecting data from school-level respondents, including students, Business Studies teachers, Academic Masters, and other relevant school staff.

  • Be able to administer paper-based questionnaires to students and support accurate centralized data entry into SurveyCTO.

  • Be comfortable using digital data collection platforms such as SurveyCTO; experience with ODK or Kobo Collect will also be considered.

  • Demonstrate strong interviewing skills, including the ability to build rapport, ask questions clearly, probe appropriately, and record responses accurately.

  • Be able to follow research ethics, consent and assent procedures, safeguarding requirements, and confidentiality protocols, especially when engaging students.

  • Be self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision while also contributing effectively as part of a team.

  • Be tech-savvy and able to use smartphones, tablets, and other digital tools for data collection and communication.

  • Have experience transcribing qualitative interviews and translating content from Kiswahili to English, where applicable.

  • Be fluent in both English and Kiswahili, written and spoken.

  • Have access to a smartphone and be willing to use it for communication and assigned data collection-related tasks.

  • Reside in one of the following regions and be willing to work in any assigned district within the region: Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Manyara, Geita, Simiyu, Tabora, and Kagera.


Please Note: This is a short-term, field-based role where enumerators will report directly to their assigned line supervisors and work from their districts of residence.

Successful candidates will be offered contracts lasting between 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the needs of the project.

Future opportunities for participation in subsequent surveys will be based on an individual’s performance during previous engagements with Educate! and availability for the full duration of the fieldwork.
