Out-of-School Youth Solutions

For youth unable to access formal education, the barriers to accessing practical and relevant learning opportunities are even greater. In many regions of Africa, nearly half of secondary-age youth are out of school and only 1 in 20 rural girls are on track to complete secondary education - making the path to employment even more challenging.

Livelihood Bootcamps

Bootcamps participants in Jinja, Uganda.

Based on our learnings, experience, and a strong foundation of evidence, we’ve built a multi-week bootcamp hyper-tailored to the needs of these young people.

Our bootcamps run in Kenya and Uganda and primarily cater to rural girls and young women.

Our long-term vision is to create a marketplace of alternative pathways built around strategic growth sectors, specific target groups, or informal economy business models.

From our in-school model in Uganda to accelerated versions of that core experience, we’ve continued to iterate upon youth-centered models that have proven to impact youth life outcomes. We’re eager to continue learning as we design new solutions for youth who cannot access secondary school.

Our solutions for out-of-school youth are built upon the evidence of our own core experience and a 3-week bootcamp we supported, which had 30%+ income gains three years later.

“Overall, this is a cool result — and one of the stronger I have seen for youth-oriented training.”

- Markus Goldstein, Lead Economist, World Bank - “Hard or soft skills for the youth?”
